And, should Kimi Raikkonen or his teammate fail again in Brazil in a fortnight, then a complete grand prix calendar – for the first season since 1996 – will have elapsed without a single team win.

The last McLaren win, with Raikkonen at the wheel, was at the Suzuka Circuit last October.

But Mercedes’ competition director Norbert Haug observed in Japan in 2006: ”Our will to win is still as strong.”
