Mark Webber has emerged as a hero of the 2006 Monaco GP.

Although the Australian worried that his podium-worthy performance risked becoming ‘invisible’ with yet another mechanical failure, his manager Flavio Briatore praised a pace that rivalled even Renault winner Fernando Alonso’s.

Briatore, of course, is on the market for a replacement for McLaren-bound Alonso in 2007.

However, 29-year-old Webber’s current boss, Sir Frank Williams, wields the real power, as he owns a contract ‘option’ on the lanky driver’s services next year.

Webber, pulling over alongside the barrier after St. Devote, was furious in the moments after his smoky retirement, but Williams’ technical director Sam Michael vowed to get to the bottom of exhaust failures that also burned Nico Rosberg’s race.

He said: ”We must ensure they are fixed.
