Toyota says it is in no rush to extend Ralf Schumacher’s expiring contract.
The German’s three year deal runs out at the end of 2007, but team president John Howett said in Cologne on Friday that the Japanese squad could extend the contract through to 2009 if it so desired.
“I think both sides really want to wait until probably we’ve seen some races and he wants to see if we are good enough to provide a machine and I think then we’ll sit down and discuss,” said Howett, amid the backdrop of Toyota’s new car, the TF107.
31-year-old Schumacher’s current teammate Jarno Trulli, who is 32, recently signed a new three year deal.
But Ralf agreed with Howett that it is “too early” to talk about next year and beyond.
