No regrets for McLaren switch, says Alonso

World champion and 2006 championship leader Fernando Alonso says he is not having second thoughts about leaving Renault for McLaren at the end of the current year.

At a press conference in Madrid prior to his home grand prix this weekend, the Spaniard said: ”I am convinced that in 2007 I will have the best car in F1.”

At Circuit de Catalunya near Barcelona this weekend, 24-year-old Alonso will perform in front of Spain’s King Juan Carlos and 130,000 other adoring countrymen, including 2,000 of his own fan club.

But he couldn’t help having a little moan about what is increasingly called ‘Alonsomania’.

”When I arrive in another country,” he said, ”I am treated with respect. Here, though, I am chased around in restaurants and can’t move about freely.”
