Open wheel return ruled out for Villeneuve

Jacques Villeneuve could still switch to NASCAR, the former formula one driver and world champion’s manager on Monday insisted.

While 35-year-old Villeneuve sang a selection of his newly launched debut music album to members of the press in Montreal, Craig Pollock told reporters that the French Canadian is “done” with open wheel cars.

“People might find him going to NASCAR unusual, but which formula one champion has ever had a chance to win the NASCAR series?” Pollock rhetorically told Canadian Press at Villeneuve’s Newtown restaurant.

He said: “And then why not (do) rally (racing), for fun?”

Villeneuve is already signed up with Peugeot to contest the famous Le Mans endurance race later this year, but Pollock said he was also “very close” to landing a title sponsor for Jacques’ NASCAR assault.

Villeneuve agreed that NASCAR is “still the main plan”, while Pollock ruled out a return to Champ Car or the IRL.

“We’re working hard with Craig on the NASCAR project for 2008,” Villeneuve added.
