R. Schumacher doubts impact of new tyre rule

Ralf Schumacher has joined a growing list of drivers who doubt that a new tyre rule will succeed in spicing up the formula one action in 2007.

As an antidote to the end of the tyre war, runners will be compelled this year to use both specifications of Bridgestone in each race.

It is hoped that the mixed use of specifications could lead to an increase in overtaking or at least a variety of strategies, but leading drivers including David Coulthard and Mark Webber think otherwise.

Spyker’s technical chief Mike Gascoyne agreed with the Red Bull pair, saying that the difference between the ‘soft’ and ‘hard’ tyres produced this winter is not great enough to make an impact.

Schumacher, who drives for Toyota, now reveals: “We tried both specifications (at a recent test) and it didn’t make much of a difference.

“I don’t think this rule is going to change much.”
