Renault on Friday announced that it has quit the dwindling F1 manufacturers’ alliance known as GPMA with immediate effect.
It is a move that confirms lengthy rumours and leaves just Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Honda in the GPMA camp.
Toyota quit the group last August, as it became clearer that the standoff between carmakers and the sport’s governing body and the threat of a breakaway championship was nearing its end.
“Renault believes that in order to achieve constructive dialogue with the FIA on the future direction of the sport, it is important to work in consultation with all manufacturers participating in formula one, including Ferrari and Toyota,” a statement read.
