Renault slam reports of near ‘super swap’

Renault has ridiculed as ‘nonsensical’ media reports that world champion Fernando Alonso nearly switched to McLaren around the time of July’s German GP.

British internet reports on Thursday suggested that the so-called ‘super-swap’ would have also resulted in Kimi Raikkonen moving into Alonso’s vacated Renault seat for a few grands prix before moving to Ferrari in 2007.

Speculation of discord between Alonso and Renault boss Flavio Briatore has loitered ever since news of the 25-year-old Spaniard’s McLaren switch broke, and the relationship was strained further mid-season when Briatore reportedly tried to convince Alonso to breach contract and stay in 2007.

As for this week’s internet reports, “Renault have dismissed the rumours as nonsensical,” news agency Reuters quoted a team spokesman as saying.
