Schu exit could help rallying

Rallying and other forms of premier motor sport could profit from the retirement of F1’s Michael Schumacher.

That is the belief of rally legend Walter Rohrl, who won the World Rally drivers’ title in 1980 and 1982. He said Schumacher polarised motor sport in favour of formula one at the height of the German’s successful career.

“In recent years sponsors were choosing to have a sticker the size of a handkerchief on a formula one car rather than (sponsoring) a whole rally car,” the 59-year-old told Auto Bild.

Rohrl added: “Perhaps this polarisation within the sport will be less from now on.”
