Schu nominated for top German honour

A Michael Schumacher fan has nominated the retired seven time world champion for Germany’s highest state decoration — the ‘Bundesverdienstkreuz’.

The newspaper Sonntag Express published the fan’s letter to German Federal President Horst Kohler, who is the only person authorised to approve the nomination.

“As well as his exceptional sporting achievements, Michael Schumacher has been engaged for many years in safety campaigns for the FIA and with charitable organisations,” the letter read.

In 2004, men’s magazine GQ proposed that Schumacher receive the German honour, but it was rejected on the basis that sporting achievements alone do not justify such an award.
