Bernie Ecclestone has guaranteed the short-term future of the popular Belgian grand prix at Spa-Francorchamps by extending the race’s contract.

The authoritative Belgian newspaper Le Soir reports that the new deal will see the historic circuit, located in the picturesque setting of the Ardennes, feature on the formula one calendar at least until 2012.

Ecclestone, F1 chief executive, reportedly accepted the proposals of the regional Walloon government.

“Our objective now is to extend the contract until 2015, but we have already taken a significant step,” economics minister Jean-Claude Marcourt said.
