Spyker’s Kolles hints at Hakkinen link

Spyker team principal Colin Kolles has added further intrigue to speculation of a possible return to formula one for twice world champion Mika Hakkinen.

Hakkinen, the 38-year-old Finn who retired in 2001, tested for McLaren in Barcelona last week amid rumours of Toro Rosso co-owner Gerhard Berger’s interest in his services for the 2007 season.

But at the Motor Sport Business Forum in Monaco this week, Kolles suggested to adrivo.com that a third team’s name might be added to the fascinating Hakkinen gossip.

Silverstone based Spyker is yet to announce a teammate for Christijan Albers next year, and Kolles said: “At the moment McLaren’s drivers are Alonso and Hamilton, but there still could be a surprise.

“There is a certain gentleman and we are waiting to see what happens with him.”

A rumour last week indicated that Spyker had offered McLaren no less than $10m to secure the services of 21-year-old GP2 champion Hamilton in 2007.
