STR goal to reach ‘midfield’ – Berger

Scuderia Toro Rosso’s three-season target is to become a midfield force in formula one.

That is the insistence of the team’s co-owner Gerhard Berger, who revealed that he and fellow shareholder Dietrich Mateschitz were content with the former Minardi squad’s ninth place in the 2006 constructors’ standings.

“Our goal for the first three years is to advance into the centre zone,” former driver Berger, a winner of ten grands prix, told the Austrian magazine ‘Kicker’.

He said: “That may not sound very ambitious, but remember that our competitors have 1000 employees, like Toyota, or have won multiple championships, as have Williams.

“We must be realistic. We achieved our maximum this year.”

Vitantonio Liuzzi scored Faenza based Toro Rosso’s maiden point at Indianapolis in July, but Berger insists that arguably the biggest achievements were elsewhere.

“We improved the car, we were consistent, and many times we reached the finish line. Last year Minardi was the fifth best team for reliability, but this year we nearly always brought the cars home.

“You have to remember where we came from,” said Berger. “The conditions we started with for our first year were not brilliant, but for us the season was absolutely fine.”
