‘Too much optimism’ about Ferrari pace

Luca di Montezemolo has not reacted with gratitude to Ferrari rivals’ near unanimous belief that the Italian squad will jet into Melbourne for the 2007 season opener as hot favourite to win.

The Maranello based team’s president suggested to the Austrian news agency ‘APA’ that it is impossible to ignore the widespread assertion that Felipe Massa and Kimi Raikkonen possess the quickest car for this year.

“I feel that there is too much optimism about us,” the Italian said at the Geneva auto show, “and I don’t like it.”

59-year-old Montezemolo did, however, admit that the red team is in good shape for the new season, and expressed relief that the years-long tyre war between Bridgestone and Michelin is finally over.

He also played down speculation that Ferrari could soon be listed on the stock exchange.

“(It won’t happen) for many years,” Montezemolo said. “There is no decision and no need.”
