Jarno Trulli on Tuesday welcomed the safety modification to Monza’s troublesome second chicane as the pre-Italian grand prix test kicked off.

The gravel trap at arguably the most dangerous section on the entire formula one calendar has now been asphalted at the Grand Prix Drivers’ Association’s (GPDA) request.

Toyota’s Trulli, among ten runners at hot and humid Monza on the opening day of the test, said of the improved run-off: “It is good to see that — a definite step forward.”

Forecast rain, meanwhile, arrived at Monza late on Tuesday, with more expected later this week, raising the likelihood that the test will now be extended to include a fourth day on Friday.
