Under pressure

Giancarlo Fisichella has refused to shy away from reports that 2007 is probably his last chance to shine in a front running F1 racer.

The Roman scored two wins compared to former Renault teammate Fernando Alonso’s fourteen in the past two seasons, and it is suggested that Flavio Briatore only extended Fisichella’s contract for 2007 to ensure continuity as rookie Heikki Kovalainen joins the team.

“I am under pressure,” Fisichella, who turns 34 later this month, admitted to F1’s official website, “because I have to lead the team.”

He said: “I am comfortable with pressure and I have lived with it all my life so for me it is just another challenge, that’s all.”

Fisichella thinks he can push for the 2007 championship, even though in the pre-Christmas tests so far, young Finn Kovalainen usually set the Renault-powered pace.

But the Italian rhetorically quipped: “Badoer was (also) quicker than Massa at Ferrari (but) do you think that Luca is going to replace Felipe just because he was quicker at the test?”
