Vettel also set for 2008 STR seat – Berger

Toro Rosso co-owner Gerhard Berger on Tuesday admitted that Sebastian Vettel would “probably” also race for his formula one team next year.

The Faenza based team confirmed in a statement on Tuesday that Vettel, formerly BMW’s 20-year-old reserve driver, will replace beleaguered American regular Scott Speed for the balance of 2007, starting this weekend in Hungary.

The statement, however, made no mention of media speculation that German Vettel is also first in line for a full time seat with the team in 2008 and 2009.

But Berger, a ten time grand prix winner, told the news agency Sport-Informations-Dienst: “Sebastian is in his twelfth year as a Red Bull man. He has a long past and hopefully also a long future with us.”

Berger clarified that it meant Vettel would race for Toro Rosso “probably also next year”.

“He is an extremely intelligent and engaged driver,” Berger continued, “who already knows formula one well through BMW. Therefore he is the ideal man for us.”
