Weber vows to avoid 1997 mistake

Michael Schumacher’s manager said he had not made the mistake of 1997 by counting on the world title.

Nearly a decade ago, Willi Weber organised, paid for and hauled a crate of ‘World Champion’ caps to the Jerez season finale to celebrate Schumacher’s first championship triumph for the Ferrari team.

However, not only did Schumacher not beat Jacques Villeneuve to the flag, he was disqualified for an unsporting crash with his Canadian title rival.

And, explaining his lack of title preparations at Suzuka, Weber told Sport Bild: ”It would be a bad omen.

”I won’t do that again! (In 1997) it cost me a lot of money.”
