Williams confirm Nelson switch

It was confirmed on Friday that Fernando Alonso’s former race engineer, Rod Nelson, has switched from Renault to Williams.

In March he will become the Grove squad’s ‘chief operations engineer’, taking over some responsibilities including race strategy from technical director Sam Michael.

“He will sit on the pit wall where I used to sit,” Australian Michael told reporters at the launch of the FW29 in Oxfordshire (UK).

“He is in charge of the race team, test team and vehicle dynamics.”

Sam Michael, 35, admitted that Briton Nelson’s new role means he will not need to attend all the races in 2007.
