Williams to use ‘bridge’ wing in Italy

Williams will debut a McLaren-like ‘bridge’ element above the nose of its Toyota-powered single seater at Monza this weekend.

At the Spanish grand prix in May, McLaren’s silver cars ran for the first time with an innovative upper flap, connected to the front wing endplates, that looped all the way over the tip of the nose.

Interestingly, although McLaren’s ‘bridge’ wing was in use in Turkey two weeks ago, the team’s MP4-22 features a more conventional wing for the Italian GP.

Williams, however, has taken the concept a further step forward, with the element appearing thicker and more curved than McLaren’s upon inspection in the pitlane at the Autodromo Nazionale on Thursday.

Moreover, it is understood that the design is not merely a part of the FW29’s bespoke low-downforce Monza package, but is to remain on the car for the remainder of 2007.
