Winkelhock to be Spyker ‘reserve’ in Australia

Spyker tester Markus Winkelhock will travel to Melbourne to be the Dutch team’s “reserve” driver.

But the 26-year-old told adrivo.com that he is not scheduled to appear as a third driver in Friday morning practice, despite the fact that there is some uncertainty about the status of Giedo van der Garde’s mandatory Super License.

Winkelhock at Silverstone this week shook down the new orange and grey livery for Spyker’s Australia-spec F8-VII car.

“It is not certain when I will drive the car again,” the German admitted, “but I will be the spare driver in Melbourne and participate in all the meetings.”

It is not known if the uncertainty about Dutchman Van der Garde, 22, relates to the dispute with Super Aguri about the validity of his contract.

The matter could be headed to the contract recognition board, which like Super Licenses is administered by the FIA.

Regardless, Van der Garde will also travel to Melbourne and if he is granted a Super License is scheduled to drive the F8-VII on Friday.
