An internal investigation by the Williams team found that Alex Wurz came perilously close to serious injury on his return to grand prix racing last month.

When analysing the Austrian’s retirement in Melbourne, the Oxfordshire based team found that Wurz – who spent the recent break in Thailand and Singapore – came within 3 centimetres from being struck on the head by the flying Red Bull of David Coulthard, according to the news agency APA.

The report said 33-year-old Wurz’s Toyota-powered FW29 even had scratch-marks on the top of the steering wheel.

“When I have an accident it is always spectacular,” Wurz smiled, referring also to close calls in Canada and Monaco during his tenure in the 90s with Benetton.
