IRL racer Scott Dixon’s new three-year contract with Chip Ganassi contains an out-clause should an opportunity arise to switch to the world of formula one racing.
The 26-year-old told the New Zealand Press Association: “The whole idea is still that if we have other options (in F1), we can still mutually sort of leave.”
New Zealander Dixon warned, however, that he would not easily give up his place as one of the top drivers in America’s open wheeler scene.
He won the series’ title as a rookie in 2003.
Dixon said of F1: “If you are not with two or three of the (top) teams, you struggle. It’s so tough (to break in).
“And politically, it’s very hard — you have a lot of these young guys who have a lot of background with (the teams) now.”
Dixon will contest America’s most famous endurance race, the Daytona 24 hour, alongside Dan Wheldon and former F1 race winner Juan Pablo Montoya in January 2007.
