The FIA’s world motor sport council met in Monaco on Friday and announced that the governing body and the carmakers’ alliance ‘GPMA’ agreed to regulations for “the next five years and beyond”.

In 2008, a statement revealed, some bodywork pieces may be banned and wind tunnel use restricted. 2009 is to see a 50 per cent reduction in downforce and possibly a four-race gearbox rule. Changes for 2010 through to 2012 were also outlined in detail.

Elsewhere in Monte Carlo, at the Monaco Sporting Club for the black-tie FIA awards gala, Fernando Alonso and Renault received their trophies for winning the 2006 drivers’ and constructors’ championships.

A suite of FIA statements also confirmed that Paul Ricard received the ‘Centre of Excellence’ trophy, Bridgestone the ‘World Prize for Road Safety’, and Sir Stirling Moss a ‘Gold Medal for Motor Sport’.

Formula One Management won an award for its television coverage of the Chinese grand prix, and Brazilian organisers won the ‘Race Promoters’ Trophy’.

F1’s retiring Michael Schumacher also accepted an FIA Gold Medal from Max Mosley and Bernie Ecclestone.

“It’s a career that has never been equalled in the past and probably never will be in the future,” said Mosley, the president of the FIA.
