Britain recorded some impressive television ratings to accompany rookie sensation Lewis Hamilton’s maiden victory at the Canadian grand prix on Sunday.

4.6 million viewers, representing a 29.6% market share, tuned in to ITV1’s live coverage of the race; well above the average of 2 or 3m viewers for most other formula one events.

But the trend was also evident for Germany’s free to air coverage by the broadcaster RTL, as 8.3 million viewers – more than any other grand prix so far this year – watched the race in the evening.

RTL’s market share for the Canadian grand prix, meanwhile, was 27.8%.
