Brazil’s Cristiano da Matta, who switched back to Champ Car racing after leaving Toyota in 2004, is still in a medical coma following his collision last week with a deer.

His team, ‘Rusport’, released an update statement on Monday outlining that 32-year-old da Matta had sustained a ‘serious head injury’.

”Cristiano continues to make slow but steady progress while in the Intensive Care Unit,” said Champ Car doctor Chris Pinderski.

”At this point in his recovery, (doctors have) begun to decrease Cristiano’s sedation.

”He’ll remain in (hospital) while his condition and progress are being monitored.”

News of da Matta’s accident had an impact on the mood at the Hungaroring last weekend, with Toyota saying in a statement that Cristiano ‘was always a fighter and everyone involved in the team wishes him the best’.

Countryman Rubens Barrichello, meanwhile, said on Friday: ‘My thoughts today are with my friend’. gmmf1dailyf1news.com
