F1 host nation Italy has been referred to the European Court of Justice for ignoring the continent-wide ban on cigarette advertising.
The European Commission’s legal action coincides with ‘reasoned opinions’ – a warning or formal advice to fall in line – that have been sent to fellow grand prix hosts Hungary and Spain.
Germany has already been referred to the Court.
European health and consumer protection commissioner Markos Kyprianou said: “These decisions underline that the Commission has zero tolerance for allowing tobacco sponsorship, no matter whether it’s for formula one or for other events.”
