FIA court bans ‘mass dampers’

The FIA’s International Court of Appeal has sided with the governing body over the issue of the legality of ‘mass dampers’ in formula one.

A statement on Wednesday afternoon confirmed that after the hearing in Paris on Tuesday, four judges overturned Hockenheim stewards’ surprise ruling that – contrary to FIA delegate Charlie Whiting’s earlier banning of the device – it was in fact legal.

The news could seriously dent Renault’s charge to retain the lead in the 2006 world championship, with the now outlawed technology believed by experts to have accounted for about half a second per lap of the ‘R26’ car’s pace.
