Greece ramps up grand prix plans

Greece has stepped up its plans to host a grand prix.

A decree signed by the south east European country’s president Karolos Papoulias makes the construction of a formula one-style circuit now possible, the Greek racing club said.

“This decree enables investors to build something and subsequently apply for funding,” Vassilis Despotopoulos, who is president of the Automobile and Touring Club of Greece (ELPA), told Agence France-Presse.

We reported in late 2005 that commercial interest in a Greek grand prix project was “big”, according to the then tourism minister Dimitris Avramopoulos.

He said: “(And) the organisation behind formula one is also interested.”
