Sidecars to support F1 in Melbourne

Mon, 8 January 2007, 02:08

The 2007 FIM Sidecar World Championship will be a support race for the season opening Australian grand prix in Melbourne this March.

Organisers of the formula one event at Albert Park have recently been on the hunt for a replacement for the domestic V8 Supercar category, which has popularly supported the GP for years.

A report in the New Zealand newspaper ‘Gisborne Herald’, however, cautioned that the sidecar news is “still to be confirmed”.

The addition of sidecars to the F1 programme could spark fears that the machines – with the rider kneeling in front of the engine and a passenger moving about on a rear platform – are too dangerous for the concrete-lined Albert Park layout.
