Swiss fans of formula one were hit with bad news on Thursday.

It is reported that the alpine country’s federal parliament has – for financial reasons – decided to scrap the public broadcaster SRG’s coverage of the sport from 2008.

The newspaper ‘Blick’ says Switzerland, which imposed a total ban on motor sports in the 1950s after a fatal Le Mans crash, baulked at a price-increase of 6.5 per cent for the live rights.

SRG boss Armin Walpen reportedly said that the broadcaster “cannot spend money it does not have”.
