Tyres to decide title – Niki Lauda

Tue, 15 August 2006, 10:55

Tyre performance in the remaining five grands prix of 2006 will settle the outcome of the F1 world championship.

That is the insistence of former triple title winner Niki Lauda, who told ‘Welt am Sonntag’ newspaper that protagonists Fernando Alonso and Michael Schumacher are similarly talented.

”Everything depends on the tyres,” said Lauda, 57, after the respectively Michelin and Bridgestone-clad Alonso and Schumacher shared eleven of the thirteen wins this year.

Referring to the swinging fortunes of the tyre war so far in 2006, the Austrian veteran said that the situation can change ‘at each race’ from now on.

Lauda also made mention of the ‘stupid mistakes’ made by both rivals at the most recent grand prix in Hungary, adding: ”They are both on the same level, and so are their cars.

”Only the tyres will make the difference.”
